“I paint not what I see, but what I remember through emotion and rhythm.”
— Genrikh Frid
Genrikh Frid was a Russian-American painter and graphic artist known for his deeply symbolic and surreal compositions. A graduate of the Surikov Art Institute in Moscow, Frid developed a visual language that fused surrealism, symbolism, and expressive figuration. His works span several decades and have been featured in exhibitions across Europe, the United States, and the former Soviet Union.
After emigrating to the U.S. in the early 1990s, Frid continued to develop his style in relative isolation, creating a prolific body of work characterized by dreamlike imagery, philosophical undertones, and a masterful use of line and color. Each piece invites contemplation of human nature, transformation, and emotion.
Genrikh Frid’s work reflects an intuitive blend of surrealism and symbolism. His compositions often feature figures in flux, morphing into birds, eyes, or abstract shapes, representing internal states and metaphysical ideas. Through rhythm and emotion, his lines capture the invisible—memory, tension, identity.
